Finished Cover Page

   Today I have began to edit my cover page through photoshop and joomag. As mentioned in my previous posts, my genre focuses on a minimalistic layout and that is what I aimed for with my cover. I kept the coverline vague and simple.

I am very pleased with the way my cover page turned out. This whole week has been very stressful with trying to figure out the layout to the cover page, but I eventually got through it. I have also taken a completely different turn in relation to the way I planned for my cover page to actually look like. In my previous blog posts, I talked about how I wanted my cover page to have a lot of color. After trying to use the images I shot on my cover page, I realized that I was getting nowhere. I then decided to turn to older photographs that I had taken, and I was immediately inspired. In my following blog posts, I will focus on the inside of my magazine. 

Cover Page Change

   So in my previous posts I uploaded possible images to use for my cover page, but as I have been making my cover page the photos didn't work. In other words, it just wasn't coming out the way I had imagined it would go. I started trying to think of other images I could shot before Saturday but nothing came to mind that would be visually interesting for my magazine. As I was trying to figure out how to fix my cover page, I started looking through photos I took at Wynwood a few weeks ago and I immediately found my solution. I choose these two photos that would be ideal for my cover page:

   Even though these images are very dark and unlike what I had originally intended for my cover page, I like the idea of using one of these images better than the ones from my previous posts. These images create a sense of mystery and are visually appealing. In my following post I will upload my progress with my cover page and possibly my table of content.

Two Page Spread

   This week, I will continue to work on my cover page using joomag.com. I would like to get my cover page done by this Thursday to continue to work on my two page spread. My two page spread will focus on the latest indie fashion trends. I would like to keep my two page spread simple. I have found a few two page spreads that have given me inspiration for my magazine.

For my magazine, I would want to make it more colorful since my cover page will have color. But I would like to incorporate the structure of the first image.

   Since I shot my images for my cover page Thursday, there were a lot of images that I thought I could use inside my magazine. Here are some I'd like to put inside my magazine:

 

   I was thinking of using one of these images inside my table of contents. I will shot more photos of other people to add variety to magazine since it is a fashion magazine. I will probably place these photos in my table of content.

   Today, I decided took shot my photos for my cover page. I was super excited to finally try out my color gels, the only problem was the light diffusers hadn't arrived yet. I had already chosen today to shot, so I had to improvise. Usually when using color gels you need a light diffuser, but instead I used a flashlight and placed it above my subject. I also placed some color gels in front of my flash while taking the photos and it worked perfectly! I didn't think it would work but I found a way.

   Here are some photos I'm thinking about using as the cover image:



 

   I will most likely be using the last two images since they're vertical. I would want to place a border around the image with a different color. I would place the masthead up at the top and the cover line at the right.

   Since I will begin shooting my cover images next week, I have decided to look at different indie magazine covers for inspiration. For the most part, the cover consist of portraits of a single model. The background is usually of one solid color and not really of the model outside. I plan to take portraits of my friends that agreed to be photographed for this project. Here are some example I found inspirational:

   In my previous posts, I posted my layout drawings and many of my ideas are very similar to the layout of these magazines. I really want to have a border on my cover to make the image more interesting. Although the first two have very neutral colors, I want my magazine to have more colors, similar to the third example. I still haven't chosen a color scheme I want to follow, but I know that I either want to have yellow or blue very present in my magazine. I believe the color scheme will give my magazine a sense of uniformity, which is what appeals to my target audience.

Shooting Schedule

   Now that I have an idea on what I want my cover to be like, I will begin to plan what days I will be shooting my photos. Since I need people to model for my photos, I will have to plan my dates according to when we will all have time to do it. Since next week we don't have school on Friday, it can be a good day to start shooting my photos. Here is a shooting schedule I have planned for next week:

March 24th: Shoot images that could be used for the cover.
March 25th: Shoot images that will be used for the content of the magazine.
April 1st: Re-shoot if there are any images that are missing.

   I choose April 1st as a part of my shooting schedule just in case I realize that I would like to add another image while I'm putting my magazine together.
